How to install Minecraft Java resource packs
A resource pack changes how the game looks — blocks, items, the interface, sometimes sounds. It is a .zip file, and unlike a mod it needs no Forge, no Fabric and no NeoForge. Vanilla Minecraft loads it on its own.

Before you start
- Minecraft: Java Edition on a PC. Resource packs do not work on the mobile version.
- The pack as a .zip file. Do not unzip it — Minecraft reads the zip as it is.
- Nothing else. No mod loader, no launcher plugin, no account changes.
Step by step
1. Download the pack
Save the .zip anywhere you like — the Downloads folder is fine. If your browser unpacked it automatically, see the note below.
2. Open the pack folder from inside the game
Launch Minecraft, then Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder. That button opens resourcepacks for you, so you never have to hunt for the .minecraft directory.
3. Drop the .zip in
Move or copy the file into the folder that just opened. Leave it zipped.
4. Move it to Selected
Back in the game the pack appears in the left column, Available. Hover it and click the arrow to push it into the right column, Selected.
5. Press Done
The game reloads its textures and the pack is live. No restart needed.
It downloaded but the game doesn’t show it
Four causes cover nearly all of it, and the first one is by far the most common.
- One folder too many inside the zip. Open the archive: you should see pack.mcmeta and the assets folder right there. If instead you see a single folder that contains them, Minecraft looks one level too high and finds nothing. Open that inner folder, select its contents, and zip those — not the folder around them.
- The pack sits under “Incompatible”. That is a version warning, not a broken file: the pack declares it was made for a different Minecraft release. You can still load it — the game asks once and lets you through — but parts of it may look wrong or fall back to the default look.
- It was unzipped on download. Safari and some Windows setups unpack archives automatically. A plain folder works too, but only if that folder directly contains pack.mcmeta. Otherwise re-zip it as above.
- It is a shader pack, not a resource pack. Shaders go into a different folder, shaderpacks, and they need Iris or OptiFine installed first. Dropping a shader into resourcepacks does nothing at all.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Forge or Fabric for a resource pack?
No. That is the main difference from mods: resource packs are a feature of the plain game. If a page tells you to install a loader first, it is describing a mod, not a pack — see how to install Java mods.
Where is the .minecraft folder?
Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft. macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft. Linux: ~/.minecraft. You rarely need this — the Open Pack Folder button in step 2 takes you straight there.
Can I run several packs at once?
Yes, and the order decides who wins. In the Selected column the pack at the top overrides the ones below it, so put the pack you care about most on top.
Will it work on a multiplayer server?
Yes. A resource pack is client-side: it changes what you see, and other players are unaffected. Some servers send their own pack and ask you to accept it — that one takes over while you are connected.
